It’s all about the binladens, baby.

I’m short on time right now so I’ll just bring up something pretty silly.

I read that “the 500 euro note, is increasing in popularity as it strives to replace the $100 bill as the criminals’ store-of-value of choice“. I wonder if this includes, or will come to include the crack dealer, icon of American rap music.

Personally I think this is rather doubtful, first and foremost because it’s the Euro and not dollars.

Not really thinking of the most obvious reason from the get go, though, I wondered what’s on the face of a 500 euro note, and does it lend itself to wordplay as well as “Benjamin”.

To my dismay, Euro banknotes don’t have people on them, but instead architecture from different time periods. In the case of the €500 notes, it’s modern 20th century architecture. It seems to me that it’s more difficult to refer to them using the fact that bridges and windows are depicted.

Not stopping there, however, I tried to find out what kind of slang already exists for them. Evidently, for the €500 in particular, some people call them binladens, because everybody knows they exist but nobody’s ever seen them. I find it hard to imagine this taking off in popular usage for rap either, but who knows?
