The taxis got it covered. I’m told that next week Beijing is going to do a trial run of dramatically reducing the number of cars on the road. This I want to see. I feel like I should take a cab across town just to see if it’s faster without all the other cars around.

On the pollution angle, I’m not too optimistic though. I’ve got nothing but anecdote to back me up, but, it feels like on weekends there’s less traffic on the streets anyway and even with that, the smog doesn’t regularly let up on the weekends. Maybe cutting the number of cars even further will do it though, we’ll see.

As noted on Shanghaiist, it seems the smog is a pretty strong deterrent for some.
