I think Chinese people from a very young age must have all the pain receptors in their mouths systematically killed. I don’t understand how people go get these super hot foods and then immediately start wolfing them down.
Today at dinner, I went and grabbed a big bowl of noodles in soup, much like the dudes in front of me in this particular line. I went and sat down, as did they, and they just started chowing down, shoveling these noodles into their mouth. I tried to follow suit, because like so many a meal, in trying to guess the proper protocol I watch other people, so I took a big bundle of steaming hot noodles and placed them into my mouth.
I promptly released them from my mouth back into the bowl, making a mess, while wincing in pain. These noodles are hot!
Certainly it is possible that my bowl was exceptionally hot and theirs were cooler or something, so, to test this theory, I started trying to watch other people getting noodles. My conclusion is stated in the first paragraph: Chinese people are in the habit of eating scalding hot things.
Actually to be quite honest, I think I may just have a very high sensitivity to heat, because even back in the US I would always be blowing on my soups or other hot things more than I remember other people bothering to.
But ow, now I can’t really taste anything because my tongue is burned anyway. At least it heals quickly.
