I was reading this article about how it’s getting tough to distinguish 22 year olds from 40 year olds in terms of their culture, that is, music and clothes and so forth. He terms them [tag]grups[/tag] in some sort of bizarre star trek reference I didn’t get.
I found it particularly amusing to read the below paragraph:
And then these Clash-listening kids grew up and had kids of their own, and the next generation of kids started listening to music, like Franz Ferdinand and Interpol and Bloc Party, that you might assume their parents would absolutely despise. Except it doesnt really work that way anymore. In part, because how can their parents hate Interpol when they sound exactly like Joy Division? And in part, because how can their parents hate Bloc Party when their parents just downloaded Bloc Party and think its awesome and totally better than the Bravery!
I found this amusing because I remembered looking at people’s facebook profiles and seeing people with their favorite music as “Joy Division, New Order”. Reflecting on this caused me to laugh a bit.
I don’t really know the extent to this is all true, but I can certainly provide my own anecdote about my parents. One time on vacation we were listening to one of my sister’s mix CDs and my father, for example, really liked this one track by the Stills. I think it might have been Gender Bombs but I’m not sure. And then this Christmas I sort of jokingly found this collection of various Christmas songs performed by all sorts of “indie” artists like deathcab or sufjan stevens or whatever, and it was a big hit both with my sisters and parents. Of course, my parents I think may fall slightly out of this so-called generation-not-gap but who knows. These aren’t the only times where my parents have taken a liking to the same music my siblings and I do, just a couple examples.
Though, they still don’t share my appreciation of rap, and I suspect they never will. Oh well on that one.
