Board Games, Snacks, Underworld: Evolution

February 5th, 2006 · No Comments

So, right now instead of watching the premier American Football event of the year, I am flattening a computer, writing an email to my professor and acting on my earlier thoughts of writing a few remarks about yesterday.

I started yesterday with two things I intended to do. I was going to go to a Chicago-area gathering of people who’s only common characteristic was that they read the [tag]Something Awful[/tag] forums. This was a rather intimidating concept as the notion of meeting people solely on the basis of the vaguest of acquaintences through the internet is obviously… a bit out there. But, nonetheless, on the strength of the encouragement of somebody I’d only just started chatting with a few days before, one “Velocity Gnome“, I decided, hey, what the hell, how bad could it be? In the worst case, I figured, I’d just leave early, and ultimately move on to my second goal for the day, to see [tag]Underworld: Evolution[/tag] with Lixian (a slightly more current site being her myspace page).

So I woke up at 7:30 in the morning, which kind of sucks, but at this point I just wake up that early without an alarm, so, oh well. I ate, did a little work, and then went to go return the keys I had forgotten to return the night previous and get my school ID back. Turns out, my ID has now disappeared and this sucks, because somebody else seems to have run off with it. After this, I shot some pool, my skill at which is absolutely embarassing, for a couple hours.

At this point, I called up a friend who I was going to be playing against, but he never showed up, on account of sleeping in, and found out that he was headed to Target to buy some pants in which he could go to a Krav Maga class. I, being bored and in need of something to do for a couple hours, decided to go with, so he picked me up and we drove south to the Target on 87th and Cottage Grove or wherever it is.

After Target though, we had noticed on the way in this place called Captain Hook’s, which was a deep-frying place with wings and catfish mostly. We decided we’d go ahead and get the 20 wings and 10 catfish pieces special for twenty bucks, thinking that it’d be a reasonable amount of food for two people to eat. I’m not really sure what we were thinking, because when we actually got it, it was this huge platter and I ate like 3 wings and two catfish pieces before I felt totally incapable of eating more. Oh, and it came with fries too, which were really good.

After this deep fried extravaganza, I got on the train and headed up to the gathering of strangers. I’d say the whole thing was about what I had expected. A bunch of mostly 20-something people (I think, at least among who I was introduced to), in varying states of education or professional life, a lot of booze, a lot of Guitar Hero (which is apparently the new DDR or something), and a lot of games. I met a bunch of interesting people, along with a share of slightly too-interesting people, that is to say, whackos, but it was a lot of fun overall. One guy brought these bacon-wrapped water chestnuts too, which I thought were really delicious. I hope to make some of my own sometime this week.

While I was on the train up there, Lixian called me to say that she and her friend(s?) hadn’t decided which showing they were going to attend, but that they were going to the Loews 600 N Michigan theatre and that the showtimes were 9:30 and 11:00 PM. I thought she said she’d get back to me later with their final plans, and that would be the end of it. As it happened though, I never heard back so I assume there was some miscommunication somewhere along the line, but I went ahead and showed up to the 11:00 show anyway.

My brief review would be this: Again, this movie, like its predecessor, is very blue. Not blue as in sad, but, actually the color blue. The whole thing seems like it’s been gone over with a blue filter, and I’m not exactly sure why. I guess it is set almost entirely at night, as it’s about vampires and such who wouldn’t be caught dead out in the light (hah). Anyway, the whole story seems even more crazy to me now. The fights were all right, though something about the way they were paced or something seemed off to me. I’m no critic, and I have no idea how to articulate what I’m thinking here. One thing I can say though, is that it is the kind of movie I am certain I would have remembered more fondly if I had gone with some other like-minded people and spent the trip home laughing about it. The whole transport-crate sex scene confused me a little, as it seemed like an awfully small space, but then, I was tired so, maybe I missed something. Kate Beckinsale is quite nice to look at, and the whole skintight leather costume deal certainly emphasizes her figure.

Oh well though, these things happen. The movie got out around 1:00 AM, so I was waiting for the #55 bus at the red-line stop for something like 30 minutes and it was fucking freezing outside. OWL service on the weekends for the #55 is really really shitty. I wonder if there is any reasonable alternative route home for me from the Loop at post-1 AM.
